Life Science in Whitechapel.

A new chapter for life sciences in an area like no other.

Whitechapel has become an established Life Science cluster, with Barts Health NHS Trust and Queen Mary University creating the foundations of the cluster through a partnership called Barts Life Sciences. This was established as an umbrella to promote and oversee the partnership’s activities taking place across Whitechapel. This includes the Royal London Hospital with its extensive clinical trial capability, QMB Innovation Centre, Blizard Institute, Yvonne Carter Building, Institute of Dentistry, Institute of Health Sciences Education and the Pathology and the Pharmacy Building.

Barts Health Trust have sold 4 surplus buildings in Whitechapel to the Department of Health and Social Care who will start the process of masterplanning a new life science campus that could create up to 6,000 new jobs and generate over 11 billion pounds in benefits to the local area (Source: Barts Life Sciences)

The Tower Hamlets Local Plan also refers to the local area surrounding the Hospital and the Queen Mary University as a location for a life science campus and directs commercial development towards providing new accommodation specifically designed for the sector.
